As I reflect on this book and about my own time in Junior High I can't help but wonder how you get kids more excited about their future and how to actually plan for it? In our small school there are not many options for career exploration at this age group. Kids seem to have the attitude that they have lots of time to focus on life after school, but really the time goes by faster than they think and there they sit, wondering what next.

This is a great point and I would add that this mentality that there is lots of time after school carries over all the way into the college years. You raise a great question but I frankly do not know if I have a good answer as how to create more excitement around choosing careers. I am currently coaching baseball and I have talked to a couple middle school teachers and counselors, and from what I saw and have heard children today are just not as motivated about school. Some say it's parenting, some say it's the computer, and some say it's video games. I believe as school counselors it is our job to try to make learning about various occupations and careers fun and exciting. To answer your question, I would say that a counselor should look into the use of multimedia to create fun ways to learn about interests and available occupations. One site that I have come across in my career adviser training is www.bridges.com. It is fun and interactive for students, while being online!
