Responsive Services - Consultation/Referrals
Consultation is an important part of responsive services. Ginny wrote writing samples that focused on her father. How could you approach Ginny to see how she is still coping with her father's death? How could you reach out to teachers, community agency programs, and parents/guardians in order to help her?

As a counselor you could take several different approaches. Individual counseling would be appropriate to touch base with her to see how she is coping. Involving her in a grief and loss group at the school could also be beneficial to her. If it would become apparent that ongoing counseling could be beneficial I would talk with her mother about a referral to a community mental health center for therapy.

The heart of grief counseling is validation. Grieving individuals need reassurance that what they are experiencing is normal. The best way to see if Ginny is coping with her father's death is through communication. Counselors can help people understand and identify the ways they are reacting. Some people grieve through their expression of feelings. Others grieve through problem-solving, thinking, and activities. The best way to reach Ginny is to communicate with her to figure out what the best solution and who should be involved.
