As someone who has only worked in small ND schools I have often wondered about counseling in the larger school districts. In our small school teachers, counselors, principal are all aware of usually what is going on with students. We know their families and know where they live. This helps in deciding when responsive services may be necessary. However, in bigger schools it must be so hard to try and reach students when they truly need counseling services. How might this be achieved and done in a timely manner?

This is an excellent discussion starter! I grew up in a small town and everyone knew when you were dealing with a difficult situation. I'm also uncertain about how you would try and reach out to students in a larger school setting. This is when it would be great to have advisory teams in place during homeroom. This would allow each teacher to work with a specific group of students and build strong, trusting relationships. I think students would be more willing to ask for help or share information if they knew an adult truly cared about them.
Being from a bigger city, it is obviously trickier to reach every student especially at a one-to-one level. Growing up, I was unaware of my counselor until I was a senior in high school, but I hope/believe things have changed. Just like with anything, in order to achieve something everybody involved must be on the same page. Most schools (if not all schools) have a counselor to student ratio. Whether a school size is bigger than another really shouldn't matter. A counselor would be responsible for the same number of students regardless how big the school size is. The school size might be overwhelming at first, but after some time and determination there shouldn't be a problem in reaching every student.
Like Lauren, I grew up in fairly large school districts. I also did not really know my school counselor. I think with more students, it becomes the responsibility of all faculty to know their students and observe behavior. If there is a sudden change or any sort of flag, the teacher should talk with the student and/or counselor to see to it that they receive the attention they need. Having appropriate structure and advisory teams would definitely help in making sure this is an affective system and that all students receive the necessary attention.
