The Transition from Grade to Grade
In this book, we really did not get to see much interaction between Ginny and her school counselor. She expresses, toward the end of the book, that she has quite a few assumptions about the 8th grade students; mostly negative. As her counselor what are some ways you help prepare Ginny for her transition from 7th grade to 8th grade and help her understand the differences she is noticing and the changes she may face or experience?

I believe that helping students transition from one grade to the next is important. I would start the process at the end of 7th grade by meeting with all 7th graders to talk about what to expect in 8th grade and to answer and questions that they may have. Introducing them to the teachers they will have would also help with the transition. I would also hold a back to school night and have break out sessions for parents and students by grade level.

This is such a good point, Kyle. I agree with the suggestions you have made, Jenny. I think that although some of the anxiety students feel at this age is due to their developmental stages, other portions come from fear of the unknown. I feel that a good portion of student anxiety could be supported, if not eliminated altogether, if a proper SEOP plan is in place. I think it could also be beneficial to go over different learning styles and goal settings with students at this age. It seemed like Ginny could benefit from recognizing her worthiness and strengths.

I think it is important to always have students looking ahead. I think there is never a better time then the present to talk with students about the future either in groups or individually. Every year it should be the goal to have the students look forward to the next school year. If students see the year ahead of them involved in different privileged activities and having fun this just adds to the excitement of becoming "those students" one day. The more the future is brought to their attention and discussed with them the more positive energy will be brought towards this change rather than negative anxiety.
