About Me
I am Associate Professor of History and Director of Public History at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I teach courses in public history and in American social and cultural history, particularly during the Progressive era, the 1920s and the 1930s. My research explores the significance and value of American cultural institutions, and my book Museums, Monuments, and National Parks: Toward a New Genealogy of Public History (University of Massachusetts, 2012) won the 2013 NCPH book award. I am currently working on two research projects. The first, a collaborative research project to historicize and theorize the progressive impulse in public history, began as a Working Group at the Annual Meeting of the NCPH in 2014. For my part, I am conducting research to identify previously under-examined radical teaching practices that pre-dated and influenced current trends in public history education. Second, I am exploring the origins of Washington Association of Morristown, NJ. This project examines the ways in which the all-male, voluntary organization framed the significance of the Ford Mansion, used as Washington’s Headquarters during part of the American Revolution. My research will raise new questions about the place of gender in the evolution of historic preservation and public history interpretation. Prior to joining the UMBC faculty, I worked in numerous public history institutions, including the National Museum of American History, the Jewish Historical Society of Greater Washington and the Accokeek Foundation at Piscataway Park.
